Happy April Fools Day and Remember satire is a verb!
I am a fan of my Congresswoman, Jan Schakowsky, of the 9th Congressional District of Illinois, so I’m a little annoyed at a popular social media influencer (Kat Abughazaleh) carpetbagging into our District to run against her. You can see Kat’s announcement video here. Gotta confess, she is polished!
I made my satirical announcement to run for Congress in the 54th District not because I don’t like Kat. I believe she’s a smart and combative social media progressive who does a great job getting under the GOPs skin on Twitter, TikTok, etc. I just think knowing the people in your District and their communities still matters, and it’s important to have broad based public service experience, not just media experience. We already have a media star in the White House and see how that is going.
While I’m a “Jan Fan”, our beloved Congressman does need to take a page from Senator Cory Booker and show her fight against the administration in more creative and noisier ways. Here are a few ideas.
How about joining protests outside of Tesla?
Or launching a protest against one of the Chicago law firms (i.e. Skadden) who have caved to the administration’s bullying tactics?
Or maybe be as bold as visiting unlawfully detained prisoners in Louisiana or El Salvador?
Or just finding and spotlighting laid off workers, folks disconnected from Social Security, and other who have been harmed by the Trump administration?
Congresswoman Schakowsky, we believe in you, but we do need you leading the fight for us against this authoritarian regime with more energy, creativity, and gusto. And we need you to hire someone like Kat Abughazaleh, so you can get your voice heard amplified on all the media platforms people use today.
